For generations, obtaining a driver's license has symbolized newfound freedom for American teenagers.

However, this rite of passage comes with significant safety concerns, as motor vehicle accidents remain the leading cause of death among U.S. teens.

Addressing these challenges, Waymo has launched a program in Metro Phoenix that allows teens aged 14 to 17 to ride independently in its autonomous vehicles.

Parents can link their Waymo accounts to their teen's profile, enabling them to monitor trips in real-time and receive ride receipts.

Specially trained Rider Support agents are available during rides to assist teens and can involve parents if necessary.

Currently, this service covers a 315-square-mile area in the Valley, excluding regions west of Interstate 17, east of State Route 87, and Ahwatukee.

By offering a safe, autonomous transportation option, Waymo aims to provide teens with independence while alleviating parental concerns about safety and logistics.

As the program progresses, Waymo plans to expand teen accounts to other cities, further enhancing mobility options for families nationwide.
