Phoenix Suns Add Mark Williams and Khaman Maluach in Draft Night Trade Strategy |
The Phoenix Suns made a significant move on draft night, acquiring center Mark Williams from the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for the No. 29 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft and a 2029 first-round pick. Williams, who stands at 7 feet tall and weighs 241 pounds, is entering his fourth NBA season after playing college basketball at Duke. He is coming off a season where he posted career highs in points, rebounds, assists, and blocks per game. The Suns will have him for one more year on his rookie deal before he becomes a restricted free agent. This trade was part of a larger strategy by the Suns to acquire talent and assets. They had previously acquired the No. 29 pick from the Utah Jazz in January, sending out their 2031 first-round pick in exchange for future first-round picks that are the least favorable among the Cavs, Timberwolves, and Jazz. Additionally, guard Vasilije Micic, who the Suns acquired from Charlotte at the trade deadline, will be sent back to Charlotte as part of the deal. Williams had been previously traded to the Los Angeles Lakers at the trade deadline, but the trade was canceled due to him not passing a physical. He joins Nick Richards as the second center acquired by the Suns from Charlotte this year. The Suns also selected Duke center Khaman Maluach at No. 10 in the 2025 NBA Draft. Maluach, a South Sudanese refugee who enrolled in an NBA Academy at 14, has shown promise as a shot-blocking center with good defensive instincts. Maluach impressed at the NBA Combine with his impressive measurements and showed potential as a rim protector akin to Rudy Gobert. Despite his size, he also has the ability to defend perimeter players and has shown improvement in his shooting, including experimenting with a three-point shot. His free-throw accuracy suggests he may have the potential to develop a solid jumper in the future. The Suns selected Maluach over other big men projected further down in the draft, such as Derik Queen and Asa Newell, as well as Arizona wing Carter Bryant. This decision indicates the Suns' confidence in Maluach's potential and his fit within their team's structure. Overall, the Suns have made strategic moves to bolster their roster and acquire young talent with promising upside in both Williams and Maluach. |
